That’s not to say that Wild Arms didn’t make use of the original PlayStation’s capabilities, as the game transitioned into fully 3D whenever players entered a battle. With an English version released five months before Final Fantasy VII, Wild Arms became a sort of a buffer for JRPG fans it was the game they played while waiting for the release of Final Fantasy VII.Ĭompared to that game, Wild Arms was more of an evolution of the Super Nintendo’s approach to JRPG design, especially with its sprite-based graphics instead of FFVII’s showcase of FMV cutscenes, pre-rendered backgrounds, and fully polygonal characters.
